While I’m not sure I’m ready to take the plunge into a full blown (limited) capsule wardrobe for my normal, everyday closet, I love the idea of building one during pregnancy. You’re only pregnant for a limited amount of time, but there’s no way to avoid purchasing at least something that’s specifically maternity designed — the bumps going to grow! Today I’m excited to share my favorite clothing pieces that have lasted me through two pregnancies. It’s a mix of maternity and non-maternity pieces, but I recommend each of the below as basics to have on hand.
MATERNITY “CAPSULE” WARDROBE:
Layering tanks: these simple tanks have been lifesavers during both pregnancies and are such great staples. I have it in multiple colors (including this pretty dusty blue) and it’s a great longer length. Another favorite is this tank. If you’re pregnant in the fall/winter, these would be perfect under cardigans and sweaters.
Solid T-shirts: this 3-pack of t-shirts comes in all the best basic colors – grey, black and white – and are the ones I can always count on to fit. Perfect for tossing on with shorts, denim or lounge shorts.
Maternity Denim: invest in at least a pair (or two) of comfortable bump friendly jeans. I promise they will feel so much better than the hair tie or belly band. The 3 I’ve worn during both pregnancies are this distressed pair ,this white pair and I love the way these fit.
Leggings: hands down the align leggings are my favorite for accommodating a growing bump. I took my normal, pre-pregnancy size and they still fit at 34 weeks. Another great option are these ankle leggings. If I had been pregnant in the winter I’d totally wear either pair with sweaters during the day.
Bottoms: if it’s warm when you’re pregnant, get a good pair or denim shorts that you can beat the heat in. I’ve worn this denim pair through both pregnancies and they’ve held up so well! These white ones are a great option too.
Dresses: the most comfortable option (in my opinion) for dressing a bump. Hello, no waistband to worry about! See most of my favorites in this post, but if I had to pick my favorite and the most versatile, I’d go for this fitted tank style (would look cute with a sweater in fall). Fitted jersey dresses are my favorites and I think they look so cute on bumps! I love all the colors that this tank dress comes in.
Bras & Bralettes: the last thing I want to wear right now is a bra with uncomfortable wire lining. These lightly lined wireless bras have been amazing and the price is awesome. My go-to bralette the past few years has been this incredibly soft one. It does run small, so size up! These are also my go-to under sweaters (pregnant or not) or with pajamas.
Lounge: the best category! I pretty much change into one of these asap after work each day. My favorite pajamas are all from LAKE and they have a great maternity section that’s perfect for middle of the night feedings. An inexpensive option that’s super soft are these comfy nightshirts. For non-pajama options, these joggers are the most comfortable ones I own and I love how lightweight and soft this pair is.
Swimsuits: never an easy or fun thing to shop for during pregnancy- ha! I’ve purchased two different prints in this one-piece, but have otherwise stuck to two-pieces in a size up. I’ve had this black top and bottom, this white top and bottom each for three years and they’re both some of my favorite ones I own, pregnant or not. SO comfortable and accommodate a growing chest 🙂
Workout clothes: this is one area I really feel like is lacking in the market. I wore the same leggings as mentioned above, but never found maternity specific shorts that I liked. This pair is easy to wear under the belly and I like the looser fit. My other go-to has been this pair that I wore before pregnancy too. My favorite tops are the power Y (love the built in bra!), the racerback and this veil tee since it’s a relaxed fit and super comfortable. For maternity specific tops this racerback is a really soft and stretchy option that I also like.

You have found so many great pieces to wear throughout your pregnancy. I think the next time around I’m going to go for more of these type of pieces! I had to get a lot of work stuff which wasn’t fun LOL! xo, Biana-BlovedBoston
These are all such great pieces and I ADORE the outfit you’re wearing in that photo!!
